Enriching a yoga asana class by weaving philosophy and symbology can be stimulating and educative for both the teacher and the student. It also exposes the students to the incredible depth and breadth of yoga and reminds them that yoga is so much more than just asana.
Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras supply us with the ethical guidelines of a yogi who is living a yogic life, a life filled with integrity, honesty, consideration and kindness for all beings. We will explore the first two limbs of Ashtanga Yoga, the Yamas and Niyamas, as well as other major concepts from the Sutras which are perfect to weave throughout a class. These concepts can be related to how we practice asana and how we can translate it into our daily lives. We will also explore a few concepts from the magnificent text, The Bhagavad Gita.
This workshop will include:
* Refresher on the Yamas and Niyamas and learn the Sanskrit
* Understand other important concepts from the Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita
* Creating a personal experience of the philosophical concept to help explain it to students
* How the yogic philosophy can relate to the asana practice
* Structuring a class with asana, pranayama and meditation related to the philosophy
* Comprehensive take home notes
